![]() ![]() “It’s really different for each school system." Schools are really busy places, Swick pointed out, and they're hungry for support, “but you have to function on the school’s schedule." Wellesley had a lot of trust, she said, but other schools took longer to get to get to know the team. “Sometimes we can offer the therapy here,” said Swick, who noted that the clinic does take health insurance, but in the majority of cases an effort is made to help the family find an outside therapist.Īs it was getting off the ground in January 2016,The Resilience Project sent out letters to high schools. Families who live in this service area have access to the hospital’s Child/Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic, and a social worker will return a call within 24 hours, “so the parent isn’t alone.” The social worker can help decide if child needs hospitalization, a day program, or another option. At this point, the project’s primary service area includes Natick, Needham, Newton, Waltham, Wellesley, and Weston. The Resilience Project offers programs for schools, parents, children, and adolescents. “We pride ourselves with doing a lot with a little," Swick said. The project team includes Susan Swick, M.D., chief of the division, and part-time social workers and psychiatrists. A part of Newton-Wellesley Hospital’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, it is funded by a gift received in 2015 from the Manton Foundation. That’s where The Resilience Project comes in. Primary care providers can work with the child to prescribe some medications, but they may feel out of their depth if the child is not improving and begins showing signs of a crisis, such as cutting behavior. Still, families trying to cope with more intensive problems often find themselves at a loss - many private therapists won’t take insurance because of the poor reimbursement rates and the wait for an appointment can be lengthy. ![]() Wellesley High School already has a variety of resources to help adolescents with challenging mental health issues, including in-school counselors and programs, and a long-term partnership with the Human Relations Service, a private, nonprofit mental health agency. Now a fledgling partnership with Newton-Wellesley Hospital is helping kids, schools, and parents figure out how to answer that question, and how to help the community and its young people build resilience in the face of adversity. So where to turn, especially in a crisis? Even if they go to classes, they - and the school - may be struggling with the teen's ongoing depression, drug issues, eating disorders or any of a hundred other challenges kids face in 2017. The only thing left is for your child to climb on the bus – and she insists she won't.įor some kids, school is a mountain so difficult to climb that they refuse to try. The school supplies are packed in the new backpack, and back-to-school shopping is done.
